On nights when the temperature drops below freezing, the sap is pumped back underground to prevent the water solution from freezing in the branches. The quick rising and falling of sap is called a “run.” To collect sap for maple sugaring, we need a combination of cold nights coupled with warm days to keep the sap “running” up and down the trunk of the tree. Until the trees’ buds burst into bloom, this sap can be collected for use during maple sugar production. The public can visit the Carlisle Visitor Center at any time between 12 and 4 but we'll meet at 1:00. Our group will meet in the lobby of the Visitor Center and join in whichever activities we think will be best for our preschoolers. Discover the secrets of maple sugaring by taking a crash course on the processes indoors, hiking to the sugar bush and collecting sap with a naturalist, and visiting the Sugar Shack to see the sap being converted into syrup. Train rides through a second sugar bush may also be available, weather permitting. Below is the schedule of events for the day.
